35% Formative Assessments (includes attendance expectations-see student guidelines)

60% Summative Assessments-including Wiscareers or binder-style portfolio.

5% Volunteerism/Community Service

A = 90 – 100%

B = 80 – 90

C = 70 – 80

D = 60-70

COURSE OBJECTIVE: To introduce student to various healthcare professions. This class will provide basic information that is pertinent to all aspects of the delivery of healthcare services. The ethical, legal, and professional considerations involved in health occupations will be explored. Topics such as employment skills, career research, college entrance, serving the community, math basics, ethical dilemmas, patient rights and dignity, epidemiology and cultural influences, in health care will be introduced. Local and national healthcare issues will be explored through class discussions, group teaching units and research exercises. Local healthcare professionals and individuals from the community will be invited to share their career choices and experiences in order to assist the student in making informed decisions regarding their future career choices. The class will progress through the curriculum at a fast pace, concentrating on preparation for the CNA program and a further career in health care. Students will be required to do research and will be introduced to community service based learning methodology prescribed by national health care education organizations.

 

COURSE OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of Health Careers and Occupations students will:

_ Explore various segments of the health care industry, and explain how they are organized.

_ Calculate basic math, understand military time,

_ Describe the basics of excellent patient care, communication, and personal hygiene.

_ Perform proper hand washing practices

_ Present information to others articulately

_ Earn transcripted College credit upon successful completion of this quarter long class.

Blackhawk Technical College’s Introduction Health Occupations is a 3 credit course and can be satisfied upon successful completion of this course (a grade of a “B” or higher). Additionally, this course serves as a launch pad/screening for the CNA program offered at BMHS through our Youth Apprenticeship Program. The CNA course is available to qualified students during their senior year. These courses must be taken in sequence and the proficiency in the content must be proven to earn the credit.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Overview of health care and potential employment opportunities in the industry. Students will explore the industry utilizing multiple sources of supporting materials from health care education organizations. Students gain exposure to the industry from many angles with an emphasis on researching, synthesizing, and presenting information in a clear and concise manner. Students assume responsibility for putting forth effort with integrity and are expected to be on time and in good attendance to maintain a seat in the class.

 

Class Format: This is a combination Lecture/ Computer Lab/Independent Study that will provide a foundation of knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for successful employment in a number of entry level positions in the health care industry.
